It seems like you can put both in one file if you want, but apparently that can cause some odd glitches and isn't being as widely supported as it used to be now that XMP is pretty standard. (Some formats do still require a sidecar file, but at least it's a consistent format.) ![]() XMP is the more modern option and includes fields equivalent to IPTC, and it's pretty widely adopted at this point. Inside is less messy, though you'll still need separate notes for each file if you want to give them tags, descriptions, extra metadata etc.Ĭan images contain the multiple types of metadata, so IPTC and XMP? XMP seems to solve my issues with the hierarchy of tags, as long as it's widely adopted. I no longer recommend Obsidian if you need your notes to work with a lot of high-resolution files, or anything with an organizational structure that can't be copied into the vault itself.Į: Ah, I thought you meant keeping the media outside of the vault. It's obvious that they don't intend to support this workflow in the long run, so I'm preparing to transition to something else. You can do some embedding (for now), but anything that's not inside the vault is treated like a second-class citizen in various weird ways that you don't notice until you try to do more advanced stuff with them. ![]() It seems like the team wants to restrict users from using multimedia content across vaults and interacting with the local storage device as much as possible for security reasons. I've been trying to use Obsidian that way, but I keep running into blocks and having to rework the setup every few months. ![]()
